Axolotls
The smiling salamanders are on their way. Axolotls are gentle, fascinating, cool-water creatures — and we can’t wait to introduce them. They’re coming soon as part of our aquatic family.

The walking fish that never grows up
Axolotls are a type of salamander from Mexico that keep their feathery external gills and stay aquatic their whole lives — which is why they look like they’re permanently smiling. They’re calm, captivating and a genuine talking point in any room.
They’re also a little different to keep, which is exactly why our team will be on hand to help you get their setup right from the start.
Why people love them
Hardy when kept cool and clean, endlessly charming to watch, and unlike anything else in the tank. Once you’ve met one, it’s hard to forget that face.
What axolotls need
A quick look at what keeping an axolotl involves. When they arrive, we’ll help you set all of this up properly.
Cool water
Axolotls like it cool — no heater, and a plan to keep temperatures down in summer.
Key needSafe substrate
Fine sand or a bare base — never small gravel they could swallow.
Key needGentle flow
Soft, well-filtered water with low current keeps those delicate gills happy.
Key needThe right food
Sinking pellets and worms — we’ll show you what and how much to feed.
Key needThe two big ones to avoid
Most axolotl trouble comes from water that’s too warm and from gravel small enough to be swallowed. Keep them cool and keep the substrate safe, and you’re most of the way there — and we’ll help you nail both.
